The Hidden Life of Hilaire Belloc


Over the years, I have often wondered about this photograph of the great Catholic writer Hilaire Belloc. For those of you who have read any of the TAN Books editions of Belloc's writings, you know that this is the image of "Old Thunder" that appears next to his bio at the end of every book. Why the grim face? Why the seemingly awkward and uncomfortable pose? Why the piercing look of concentration?

Well, we at In Toon With the World have solved the mystery and unearthed a rare treasure that gives us Belloc fans a unique glimpse at a hitherto unknown aspect of this great man's life—an aspect that explains why this pose was so natural to our beloved Hilaire..
